Let’s be honest, I’m not the strongest person around…. in fact trying to lift a 8kg bag over my head doesn’t tend to go over well (I’ve tried, I failed and ended up with a sore head later). So portability is the most important thing for me when it comes to travel, unfortunately when you’re a blogger / youtuber, having good equipment is a must, unfortunately most “good” camera equipment is also big and bulky :/
So it’s taken me a little quite to testing different gear and determine what works best for me, and I think I’ve finally worked out a good set up that works well, especially if you’re small and weak like myself 🙂
For blogging / Youtube makeup tutorial purposes I’ve found my Sony NEX 5R to be tried and true, especially because it does have a 180 degree flip screen. I’ve taken this on a number of trips now, so it has definitely seen better days, but I’ve found that mirrorless cameras are a great light-weight alternative to the standard DSLR. The main lens I use (and have used for almost all the Imagery travel photos you see) is the kit 16-50mm lens, I wish it did have a bit more zoom, but I did purchase the 18-200mm lens to try and it was horrible. Quality of the photos was just terrible, so I sold that and went right back to the kit lens which does look a little bulky, but it gets the job done 🙂
When I’m filming videos for my main channel (like a makeup tutorial), then I tend to opt for the 50mm 1.8, just because it has great depth of field and gives you that “DSLR” feel 🙂 I also toted around my 20mm 2.8 when I wanted better quality selfies, but I’ll be honest, if you don’t have a ton of space for different lenses, just stick to the 16-50mm, I’ve filmed videos on this before and while you won’t get that same depth of field, I think it’s still a good compromise. Just make sure you have sufficient lighting!
When it comes to on the go vlogging, even a mirrorless can be a little too big. I used to use my iPhone but the quality was just horrible and the random frame rates was a nightmare to edit. So I did my research and have found the Canon S110 to be my perfect camera of choice. What I love about this camera is not just the quality, but how well it shoots in low light! (means vlogging your dinner is possible!), but the other aspect (which has since changed for the Canon S120 🙁 ) is that the microphone is on the front, so my fingers never accidentally cover up the mic! (happened all the time with my other point and shoots)
Those are my blogging / youtubing travel camera equipment of choice, I hope that gives you all a better idea of what I prefer to travel with 🙂 The equipment I use at home tends to be far heavier and bulkier, certainly not travel friendly in the slightest 🙂 When I can I’m keen to get my hands on the Sony RX-100 III to test as a combined blogging / vlogging / main youtube video camera for travel! (No need to carry two cameras!)
