Whether you travel often or infrequently, knowing what makeup and skincare to pack for travel can always present itself to be a bit of a challenge. Especially if you’re someone like me who has a rather extensive skincare and makeup routine. Travel has been a long time passion of mine, as is skincare and makeup and as a result over the years I’ve picked up a couple of tips that hopefully you’ll find useful when trying to pack for your next trip.
1. Plan based on occasion, location and activities
The sort of products you pack for a warm tropical beach side vacation will be pretty different to what you likely would pack for a city vacation. When it comes to holidays with a warmer climate I try to pack lighter because I don’t need my makeup sweating off my face. I focus more on colourful shades for my eyes as tropical vacations are the perfect excuse to try out that turquoise blue you’ve always wanted to wear but couldn’t find the right occasion to do so. Similarly if I’m going somewhere cold, I pack richer skincare products to keep my skin hydrated and go for warmer richer colour tones. Of course there are no rules around what colours you can and can’t wear, but try to think about what colours you’d like to try and more importantly would be comfortable with on your vacation.
2. Opts for light weight packaging
Normally I’m all about that glass packaging, it’s more environmentally friendly for one and as someone who spends a lot of time studying chemicals I feel it is generally safer. That being said when you travel glass is just simply heavier and a few heavy bottles might tip the scales over. Not just having to pay for overweight luggage but having to actually lug the excess weight around as you move about on your trip. So where I can, I try to go for physically lighter products. It’s also worth decanting certain products where you can into small travel friendly containers, this isn’t always going to work for some products that tend to oxidise when in contact with oxygen. In a pinch, I’ll often use old contact lenses containers, they can hold a lot of product and are a great space saver!
3. Multi purpose products win overall
Not only does this lighten the load of your luggage, but it’s a generally good rule to follow if you’re looking to save cost. Lipsticks make great creme blushes, you don’t need to own both. Same for bronzers, face powders and certain eyeshadows. I find most of my face powders make for a great base eyeshadow and my contour or bronzing powders are great for my crease. It’s certainly worth getting creative and trying to work out how you can get multiple uses out of the same products.
4. Pack based on routine
I find packing my skincare and makeup according to my routine helps with the flow on trips, especially if I’m traveling for work and need to get out the door early or when you’re working in tight spaces. All my day time skincare is often seperate from my night time skincare so that when I get ready in the morning I only need to grab one bag plus my makeup bag, and when I’m done I can throw it back into my luggage without taking up too much of the limited space I often have in hotel rooms.
5. Use palettes where possible
There are amazing palette in the market that are perfect for travel, the Smashbox Cali Contour Palette is one of my favourites because a lot of the colours work great for eyeshadow as well, so it saves a lot of space, comes with a large mirror and the package is pretty sturdy to boot so I don’t need to worry about it damaging in transit.
Hope you found these tips helpful, travel is such an exciting time and opportunity that what to pack shouldn’t take away from the experience itself.
