When the Summer Fridays Dream Lip Oils ($26USD or $43AUD) first dropped you can only imagine my excitement given the hype over lip oils in general over the last few years. Especially since Summer Fridays in my eyes is known for having some really beautiful moisturising skin care. These are available at either Mecca for Aussies or Sephora for those overseas.
For those not familiar with lip oils, they are essentially a blend between lip gloss, lip balm and lip tint / colour. They give the lips a beautiful soft flush of colour, top with a highly wet glossy finish that is suppose to leave the lips moisturised. If you’re someone who is generally a fan of lip glosses, this is a great alternative with the added benefit of hydration for the lips.
My personal experience with lip oils has mostly been with Colourpop and Dior, which so far haven’t disappointed me so I was keen to give Sunday Riley’s version a shot, especially after how much it had been hyped online. Currently there are four shades that are offered:
- Soft Mauve – Cool mauve
- Pink Cloud – Sheer soft pink
- Blush Dreams – Sheer blush
- Rosewood Nights – Sheer rosy brown
I managed to pick up the shade Soft Mauve. If you know me, my personal taste in lip colours has always been that “just kissed” looked (or just had a red icy pole look…), something a little darker than my natural lip colour but not too dark that it’s obvious that I’m lip stick.
Application was a breeze, the doe foot applicator was a beautiful sized that curved to my lips perfectly and one dip was more than enough for my personal tastes. Though I can see those who love a heavier coverage going in for two swipes instead.
What I didn’t expect was a bit of that fresh minty sensation you get when you wear plumping products. Definitely not as strong as a traditional lip plumper, but definitely a sensation I noticed, wasn’t expecting and wasn’t the biggest fan of. I know some people love this feeling, I personally don’t love any lip product that gives off any residual sensation. Heck, I don’t even love skin care products that do that even though I’ve come to accept it from my exfoliators and retinols.
Though I will note that I personally haven’t read many people having the same issues I had, in part because I don’t naturally read a ton of reviews to avoid being swayed, but it’s worth noting if it’s something you still want to try as the minty sensation could just be a me thing.
However, it wore beautifully in my opinion, the glossiness faded over time leaving me with a beautiful soft tint of colour afterwards. Of course like most lip products, you’ll need to constantly reapply throughout the day if you want that polished look.
All in all, not my favourite lip oil out there purely for the minty sensation I get. It does fade after a while probably because the product is also wearing down. Still I cannot deny how beautiful the application and wear is and I’ll be keeping it actually for when I intend to be photographed as I love the look it gives, I just don’t think this is something I’ll love to have as a daily item to wear.
