I’ve never been one to spend a great deal on things like makeup brushes, which may come as a huge shock to everyone reading this. I feel thanks to my blog / channel / cosplay, I tend to use my brushes more than the average person. Safe to say, thanks to some more extreme looks, my brushes go through the ringer (I’m still washing blue pigment out of one of my highlighter brushes from two years ago) and so I feel better knowing my brushes are on the cheaper side so I can really get my use out of them.
That said, whilst wandering through Asia I came across Hakuhodo, a Japanese brush maker famous for their luxurious brushes. I’ve tested out their brushes before and oh my goodness they are some of the softest brushes you will ever touch. So I decided to take the leap, promised myself I would only ever use this brush for “normal” wear, nothing for cosplay.
And despite its hefty price (around $50USD), I’m so glad I bought it. Granted it may be the only one I ever own, but use it to apply powder is such a joy that I actually look forward to it (if that doesn’t make me sound too crazy). It feels amazing on the skin, does a great job a distributing the product evenly and best of all, it’s travel friendly 😀
However a big issue I know some people will encounter, including I, is the animal cruelty aspect. Based on the research I’ve done and speaking to the SA I’ve encountered at Hakuhodo, I’ve been told that the hairs collected were either taken from animals who died of natural causes or loose hairs that naturally fell off the animal and that no animals were tortured or killed for the purpose of creating these brushes. After making the purchase, I went through their website to try and get an answer but haven’t been able to find one! So I think this is something important to keep in mind if animal cruelty issues are very close to your heart.
Personally 99% of my brushes are synthetic, and I can defintely feel a massive difference between this brush and those in terms of quality and softeness. At the end of the day, it’s a personal choice. Whilst this is amazing brush, I’m not really sure I’d purchase another. Only because I don’t know with 100% certainty how these brushes were created. To each their own!
Do you own one? What do you think?
