NYX cosmetics was once a brand most Aussies could only obtain through either friends traveling overseas or mail forwarding services. But for the last few years they finally made it to Australian shores both through their own online store and Priceline and have made it immensely easier to enjoy the brand. I decided to give the NYX Suede Matte Lipstick Soft Spoken a shot which can be purchased for either $9.00USD or $18.99AUD. I’m not usually a fan of matte lip products, but I want to love them because of their look and longevity and so I continue to try them to see if there is a formula that could work for me and I’m pretty excited by this one!
Firstly, I want to take a moment to appreciate the component / packaging, it’s simple but really cute. I feel like a lot of lipstick packaging can be simple but also pretty boring. The heart is a beautiful addition and I love the way it overlaps the lip, it was definitely the first thing I noticed when I first picked up this lipstick.
The lipstick comes (from the best of my knowledge) in a range of around 18 different colours. I say range because depending on which website you to go the number of colours tend to vary. However, the range of colours is wide enough to cover a variety of skin tones, including some beautiful nudes that would be my usual go to. But I decided to try something different as my collection is mostly nudes. I’m trying to add bolder colours to my collection, but not too bold that I wouldn’t feel comfortable wearing the colour in public and can hopefully still pull it off.
The colour I chose was Soft Spoken, it comes off as a more dusty rose darker shade, on my fair skin tone I felt it gave a more “vampy” feel in real life, though it appears softer in the photos. It might sound strange to say, but I really love how this lipstick gives my entire face a positively polished look, I felt very put together once I put it on, like it really pulled the entire look together. Despite my aversion to matte lipsticks due to their general dryness, I found this one to be a pretty creamy formula and was very comfortable to wear even for extended periods of time. Though I did find it had a tendency to accentuate my lip lines, so I’d really recommend hydrating your lips periods to application. It’s nothing something I’m really used to doing since most lip products I sue are by their nature moist, glossy and hydrating.
When it comes to wear time, I’d say not surprisingly this stood up a pretty long time so long as I wasn’t eating or drinking too often. And all bets are off if you are going to eat something oily. I say not surprisingly because the pigmentation is full coverage, and the colour was on the deeper end for me which often means it naturally lasted longer than a nude colour. However once the original colour wore down a little bit, I was left with a beautiful “bitten” tint which I loved! and if I were honest, day to day I really love that bitten or cherry lip tint look, like my lips with something extra. Nothing too wild or noticable. One of the things I loved about this lipstick over say matte liquid lipstick counter parts is that the fade or wear of the lipstick was gradual, instead of appearing “cracked” which I find more liquid lipsticks tend to do. Next time I think I’d consider giving a nude shade a shot.
In terms of scent, it’s pretty similar to most NYX cosmetic lip products if you’re familiar with them, a sweet vanilla scent that isn’t too overwhelming but still noticeable for those who may be sensitive to it.
Another thing to note is that this line of lipsticks have a line of lip liners from NYX that match perfectly with them using the same names. I haven’t personally tried and of them and when I tested this lipstick I didn’t bother to use any lip liner as I felt it was personally wearable and long lasting without it. However if you’re something you loves to keep things consistent and match, I’d recommend checking those out.
Overall, whilst I’m still a bigger fan of the glossy lipsticks, this is a front runner when it comes to matte lipsticks and I’d highly recommend these, especially if you’re not a matte liquid lipstick lover but still want something that appears matte and has good lasting power.
