Okay, tough topic time *deep breath* I really didn’t want to ever mention this to anyone, let alone my blog. Buuuut, I do want to be as upfront and honest about myself as possible! I suffer from dandruff, to a pretty bad level. Gross, I know. I’m not leaving flakes everywhere I go, but it’s still bad to look in the mirror and be able to spot them! Having black hair doesn’t help either ๐
It’s actually one of the reasons I stopped going to the hairdressers. I think the last time I went to the hairdressers was probably about 4 years ago. And admittedly I’ve never really had an enjoyable hair cut experience, but after the last lady I tried pretty much humiliated me at the salon because of my dandruff -_-
I’m a cosplayer, I style wigs ALL the time, how hard can it be to just cut my own hair?
Surprisingly easy actually, so I’ve been cutting my own ever since, saves me money and awkward forced chit chat =D
I think over the course of my 4 years I’ve tried a number of anti-dandruff shampoos, Head and Shoulders appears to be the most popular one, but honestly it didn’t make a massive difference for me ๐ I know, I forced myself through an entire bottle.
So I searched the internet and discovered the two Neutrogena products above in the Yahoo Answer forums. I tried the Daily Control first, just because it seems more readily available and was cheaper. A few months later when I was able to check out the Priceline store in the city, I managed to grab the Therapeutic version. Comparison time?
Daily Control didnโt cut it for me, I wonder if it really made a difference at all. Maybe I have severe dandruff, who knows. But despite following the instructions down to the T (Gelโฆ sorry bad joke ๐ ) it probably only rid me of 10% of my dandruff?
Moving on to the Therapeutic version, wow! This probably eliminated about 90% of my dandruff after about 2-3 washes. BUT, this stuff stinks. Iโm not kidding, I cringed every time I put this stuff in my hair, but it looked amazing! So sleek and clean @_@
But as with all anti-dandruff treatments, if you stop using it, the dandruff will return. As mine did, I just couldnโt hack the smell. Still, Iโm not throwing this bottle out, not only was it on the $$ side, but hey, itโs the only formula Iโve found that works! Maybe when I toughen up my sense of smell I dive back into it.
In Summary
If you suffer from bad dandruff, go the Therapeutic formula, it at least does actually treat dandruff really well! BUT, beware the smell. Hopefully youโll be able to put up with it better than me :O
Okay, awkward post over! Moving on to cuter things later~~

Aw, Flipper! ๐ What a horrid hairdresser that woman was!
I’ve only ever used the Head and Shoulders shampoo, not because of dandruff, but because it actually makes my hair feel really clean. Maybe you could go to a doctor/dermatologist and ask for recommendations, rather than a salon?

<3 <3 I knoooow, I feel like my life is a bit like a Seinfeld episode, because I used to think I need to get my hair nice and ready before I went to the hairdressers so they wouldn't judge me! ๐
My scalp isn't itchy, nor do I actually drop any flakes, so it's def not uber bad or anything, but that might be an option later =D

Nizoral all the way for me. Get it at chemist warehouse. Helped me more than all other shampoos I’ve tried ๐

Seriously? Wow thanks! =D You have the answer to everything, ridge filled nails and now dandruff! <3 <3

Head and Shoulders worked for me. Never really tried anything other than that. Oh and dandruff’s nothing to be shy about! Dandruff happens to all of us from time to time. ๐
Celina says
Most likely this is a case of what works for one person, may not work for another!
Aww and thank you <3 Yeah, glad others can sympathise ๐

I suffer from dandruff too ๐ I’ve not tried any other dandruff haircare products other than Head and Shoulders. I’m glad it works for me, because at least it smells good.
And boo to that hairdresser who put you down because of a little thing called dandruff. Who made her the hair police?
Celina says
I’m so glad Head and Shoulders works for other people! I was beginning to wonder why it was so popular!
Seriously! How can people be so rude!? I went there to pay her to cut my hair, NOT to make condescending comments about it :/

I might be a bit late to jump on this topic but I just discovered your blog today (and I love it)! My mother and I both suffer from dandruff and we’ve turned to natural remedies. Head & Shoulders used to work for us but they changed their formula awhile ago and now it doesn’t anymore ๐
What my mother does is mix a 5-10 of drops of tea tree oil into a couple of tablespoons of aloe vera gel, mix it up, and leave it in her hair like a mask for 15 minutes. Then she rinses it out with a fragrance free shampoo. That worked for me for a couple of weeks but then it stopped, so I started using 1 part apple cider vinegar mixed with 1 part water. I put the mix into a spray bottle and spray my scalp and leave it in for up to an hour, then rinse it out with a pH balanced herbal shampoo I found at a health store to help cover up the smell! If I don’t have time for that, I use the T Gel in between washes which is pretty strong and pungent.
Celina says
Oh wow, thank you for taking the time to share all that! It’s very informative ๐ How often do you find you need to wash your hair using this method? I’ll ahve to try experimenting with it ๐
Jeanne says
No worries! It’s difficult finding discussions about this so I thought I’d share ๐
I usually wash my hair every other day unless I really feel like I need to do it daily (when I’m working out, during the extra hot summer days etc). The tea tree oil + aloe vera combination I would use every other wash. The apple cider vinegar + water combination I use once a week or once every 2 weeks. I think it can be done once to twice a week but the smell is so overwhelming, everyone in my house always asks what I’m cooking when I leave the apple cider vinegar in my hair! Good luck!

Thanks heaps! ๐ I wash my hair once every 2-3 days (depending on the weather) since I tend to heat treat my hair after every wash so I like to space that out as much as possible to avoid over damaging it. I’ll be keen to try the tea tree oil and aloe combo first before venturing into the apple vinegar XD I’m uber sensitive to scents so I’ll try and avoid it till I can’t! Thanks again, you’re awesome <3
