Em Cosmetics has been around for year now, but I’ve only just gotten around to actually reviewing some of my favourite items from their line. For those who don’t know Em Cosmetics is a brand created by one of the OG Beauty Guru YouTubers, Michelle Phan. I’ve been a long time fan of Michelle Phan and her work (and I actually got to meet her once way back in the day), in fact she inspired the entire Book of Fables series that I created over a decade ago now. I’ve got a ton of products from her line that I absolutely love, but today I’ll be testing out the Em Cosmetics Divine Skies Eyeshadow Palette in Da Vinci, which you can purchase from her official website for $42USD or $67AUD.
Da Vinci contains a sultry range of champagne colours, warm browns and deep neutrals. The entire palette leans towards a warm tone without being too orangey and so I feel like the colours would work well with a range of different undertones. The palette has enough colour depth, that you can use either the shimmer shades or some of the lighter brown shades as a simple wash over the eye lid for day time, and then the deeper browns for either an evening look or as a softer eyeliner to avoid creating a harsh eye look.
I always love comparing eyeshadow palettes with the modelling photos on the website because I find the pigmentation is never quite as intense as on the websites. And this palette is not a huge exception to that general rule, for the everyday casual user it would take a really good eye primer and significant effort to achieve the high fashion looks you find on the website. However I think generally this is a good thing for the average user who isn’t going for anything too heavy and is looking for something much more wearable which is what I’ve managed to achieve with my own eye look.
In terms of wear, I found it pretty competitive with most other good quality eyeshadows, and it lasted throughout the entire day and even into the night for me so long as I was using a good eye primer. I wouldn’t bet any money that most eyeshadow palettes could last a day without a good eye primer (depending on the oiliness of your eyelids). The texture is smooth, almost buttery but not quite to the level of say a Natasha Denona eyeshadow.
Overall, it’s a great palette for a wearable everyday look. Whilst the package is stunning and very unique to Michelle’s overall ethereal branding, I did sometimes find it a little hard to open because of all tight the latch on it was. Still, that wouldn’t (and hasn’t been) a deterrent for me to pick up a couple more shades which I’ll cover in a future blog post.
