This season’s Shu Uemura‘s Spring 2011 catalogue had a highly inspiring makeup cover, it was tropical, it was fresh and best of all it was blue! So I knew I had to give this look a go~ I was initially a bit concerned because when I first swatched the colours for the first time they were not at all pigmented :/ But after I applied some primer, that all changed! Hope you enjoy the look π

Face
Prepare face as usual, and then using a bronzing powder, start contouring your face, apply it to the sides of your forehead, under your cheek bows, sides of your nose and below the jaw line. Take a candy pink blush and apply to the apples of your cheeks. Then take a shimmery highlighter and place on your forehead, cheek bones, bridge of your nose, cupids bow and chin.
Eyes
Prime your lids with a skin tone primer, then apply a shimmery yellow powder to your brows. Take a shimmery lime green shadow and apply generously to the crease so it covers part of the lid and brow bone. Next take a rich shimmery ocean blue shadow and apply to your lids, extending to the crease. Take a dark matte purple and apply to the inner 1/3 of your eyes and outer 1/3. Make sure to blend any harsh lines between all the colours, but do not over blend. We want the colours to look like they are fading into one another, not mixing them.
Take a matte pink colour and apply to the inner corner of your eyes and 1/3 of your lash line. Take the same blue and apply to the outer 2/3 of your lower lash line, then apply a thinner line of purple over the blue.
Take a purple gel liner and line your upper lash line. Curl your lashes and apply two coats of mascara. Line your waterline with a peach coloured eyeliner pencil.
Next take a pair of false eye lashes, and cut out about 3/4 of a cm. Two for your upper lash line, and two for your lower, these should be smaller than the previous two. Coat the false lashes for your upper lash line in the purple gel liner, and then coat the lower false lashes with a gold cream eye shadow. Wait for the lashes to dry, and then apply to your lash line with eye lash glue.
Fill in your brows with a dark brown powder, and define with a clear brow gel.
Lips
Apply a candy pink lipstick, then dab a touch of gloss to the centre of your bottom lips, press your lips towards to transfer and even out the shine.

Wow, Celina, I think you’ve done this even better than the original Shu Uemura ad!
What brushes and tools do u use for each shade?
Celina says
Thank you so much π I’m so flattered, that’s an amazing compliment! π I use a mixture of brushes, but for this look I -think- it was the 217, 209, 219 for MAC and a blending brush for eyes by Lancome. Not 100% sure, but those tend to be the brushes I constantly reach for π Hope that helps!

it’s true i meant every word, i did wonder how the original ad could show up a green shade when the palette only contains yellow, blue, purple, brown and pink. Does yellow mixed with blue give green?
I realised u also used coastal scents palette for ur look, but i really loved the blending, i think i’ve been overblending my shadows, that’s why i cant get such an effect!
wish i could study makeup from u! i think u’ll make a great makeup trainer! π
Celina says
<3 <3 You are so so sweet! Seriously, I'm very honoured π
Yes, I did mix the blue and yellow a bit, but it wasn't giving me a strong enough green so I used some green from the coastal scents palette over the top to give it better lift.
The best way to make the colours distinct is to apply them without any blending at first. Once you've placed your colours, blend the edges where the colours touch lightly. Most likely the colours will still appear pretty blended, so after I've done that, I go over the colours once against with the shadows to make the individual colours stand out more! So it's really about layering the colours, and going over it a few times to balance the colour intensity.
I hope I'm making sense! And thank you so much for your comment, it does give me ideas on what sort of videos to do and I think I will do one for this particular look π
Louisa Koh says
Yes u are making sense, every time I look at your pics for this post it makes me wanna go and try to recreate it for myself!
Yes, do create a vid teaching us how u did it and i’ll be sure to watch it! π

Woah, you belong in IMATS or something, talent like that should go on show!
I’ve a question about that canmake highlighter you used; I have yellow undertones like you and was wondering if I should buy that highlighter – it looks so white in the photo and I’m thinking it isn’t natural for my Asian skintone even I apply lightly? Is this highlighter natural enough for everyday makeup?
Celina says
Wow thank you so much! That’s a very generous compliment π
Honestly, I don’t think the Canmake Highlighter 01 is a good everyday highlighter, I think something with a more yellow based would be a lot better. So far the only one I know of (but admittedly I haven’t shopped around much) is the NARS Albatross which is yellow based. Alternatively if you are looking for a cheaper option, getting a large very light yellow eye shadow would work similarly π Hope that helps!

Thanks Celina! This does help! I think I might turn to the NYX highlighter coz I saw that in your tutorials it had a relatively natural finish. Keep up the amazing artwork π
