I think it’s time I had a bit of a rant, back when I was younger all my blog posts used to be rants and raves from my day to day life, and as I got older I don’t know why I felt the need to censor my thoughts and present a particular exterior to the world. One that was always positive, focused on only the good aspects of my life. But realistically I have bad days just like everyone else, and I’m in the mood to rant about something that has been stressing me out today!
Youtube.
I love making Youtube videos, I love creating creative makeup tutorials and movie like videos that tell a story, I’ve always loved telling stories and expressing my emotions through the visual arts π But I also love talking about my daily makeup rituals and following the latest styles in beauty and fashion! I’ve always felt I sat in a bit of a mix bag and was never really a beauty guru nor creative makeup artist.
Unfortunately one key aspects of my videos is music, and I don’t make my own music. Instead I search for royalty-free music that allows me to legally modify accordingly to my video content. However so have many others, and the unfortunate aspect of this is when people modify the music just enough to claim copyright over it. And I’ve been having to deal with these sort of people claiming copyright over my entire videos that happen to use the same original royalty-free music I’ve used π
And let you tell you, it’s something I find highly stressful! I’m a bit of a control freak and I’ve heard so many horror stories of people who rightfully so rejected claims to their own work to have Youtube later shut them down. Call me a nervous Nancy, and even though legally I’m covered and in the right, when big companies come after you, I’ve got so much more to lose if Youtube for some reason doesn’t investigate the evidence properly (something I hear happens a lot) and rules in favour of a company instead.
To be honest, the stress of it all kinda kills the joy that creating Youtube videos bring. I have a full time job that already makes me a huge amount of stress, so having something I consider my hobby do the same just isn’t what I’m looking for.
I’m not really sure what to do, but I felt the need to rant because I just deleted another video I put a lot of work into for the same reasons mentioned above. Toby is so kind and keeps telling me he’d love to make music for my channel, and I’m thinking that potentially that may be the route to take. I’m also considering dabbling in music composition myself anyways so maybe this is the kick I need. It does make it harder to create regular videos, but at least it will remove the stress I experience with using other people’s royalty-free music.
Anyways I thought I’d have a little rant, I’m still traveling through the USA so dealing with these issues isn’t exactly ideal, but I figured at least I have a blog I can rant on for a bit π Get my thoughts out there, and potentially see if others are experiencing the same!
For those who do make Youtube videos, have you guys experienced the same?
Peta says
I’m confused… do people actually change royalty free music on purpose so that they can claim your advertising revenue? That’s disgusting. π
Jess says
This is why I don’t put music on my vids! Stressful and hard to get my head around it all lol. If you and Toby have music talents, then I would definitely suggest it’s time for you guys to showcase them! π
Celina says
Yep! Def looking into making our own music, such a headache! So not worth it to search for good free music anymore π

Yes, I’ve experienced it two times:
– One time another company fraudulently claimed that they owned one of incomptech’s songs. Oftentimes companies will do this because Youtube creators don’t challenge it, so they collect the dough. I challenged it and Youtube reversed it.
– Another time on CCMIXTER.org I found a song licensed under CC 3.0 Attribution. I used it and then suddenly got a copyright claim on it. What happened was some asshole uploaded a song to CCMIXTER that he didn’t own and was made by some small music producer. Gahd, why do people do that?! >:(
This problem seems to be increasing, so I really only stick with two sites that I haven’t had issues with. One is an independent song producer on YT called TeknoAxe, the other is VImeo’s music store. Unfortunately it seems that people on CCMIXTER/Free Music Archive are uploading songs that they don’t belong the copyright to, so I avoid that place like the plague now. Feels like pulling teeth to find YT-friendly music…
Celina says
Wow! Thank you for letting me know, I’m really sorry you went through all that but I’m just happy to know I’m not alone here!
I had someone try and do the same thing when I used incomptech songs too! Ugh, these leeches! Thanks for giving me a heads up on the places I can go, I feel like I might need to start purchasing music (even though it can be pretty expensive) or try my hands at making music (which I suck at)
Gridley says
Maybe make custom music that you can reuse for each video.
Celina says
This seems like the only options now π

Yes, that is defenately something I stress about to. Thhough I havn’t had a company comming after me or something. But just the thought, uh, its ugly.
Celina says
It’s completely ugly! I’m glad you haven’t had it happen yet, I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you!
