I have been wanting to put this post together for the longest time! I always love putting together comparison post because I feel like it really helps flesh out my likes and dislikes about each product. If you love Chanel makeup then you’ll be aware of the existence of two types of eye shadow quads currently in the market. Pressed powder which is typically available from the USA and Baked powder which is available everywhere else.
As I’ve purchased and used both frequently I thought it would be great to put together a little comparison between the two for those who are curious~ I own the same palette in both makes called Mystic Eyes.
Visually the difference is pretty obvious. The baked version comes with four circle pans with the applicator on the right hand side. Where as the pressed powder version has square pans with the applicators sitting on the bottom of the palette.
In terms of quality, I think both are pretty outstanding and which you prefer really depends on your own personal preferences. In terms of application, I felt that the pressed version gave more even colour pay off, with better pigmentation. I felt the baked version needed a couple more swipes for some of the lighter shades to match what would only need one swipe with the pressed.
The thing I found interesting was the actual shades appears to be slightly different despite the palette essentially being the same shade. The pressed pigments appear just a touch more vibrant / saturate than the baked (note I swatched the baked shadows dry). But especially the last copper brown shade, the tone appears to differ between the two palette.
One of the major things to take note of however is the amount of product you get with each palette. Pressed powders typically come with more powder, than the baked for some reason. They appear similar, but if you check the measurements, baked powders come with 0.04oz of product verse the pressed powder which comes with 0.24oz. It’s a massive difference!
Price wise, the two seem to be very similar, I’ve bought mine over the years online and whilst traveling, so pinning down an exact price each time is hard thanks to the moving dollar. However if you live outside the States, the baked version is going to be a lot easier to obtain. If you are keen on the pressed versions you’ll need to try your hand at some online shopping or take a quick trip over to the USA 😉
Personally, I prefer the pressed powders any day. I feel like I get better colour pay off, more product and they are much easier to apply and use. Which one do you prefer? Baked or Pressed?

The difference really lies on the finish you’re trying to achieve. Here’s an article/blog that a friend (Beauty Geeks) covered recently on an easy, gorgeous blended eye makeup technique by Chanel’s makeup pro, Julie Cusson, using only two shades from the baked Chanel Les 4 Ombres palette. The end effect is a more silkier, translucent finish. Check out the video too:
