Fables in Fashion

Inspired by an advertisement board for Napoleon Perdis I found at my local Chemist :) The colours were so vibrant, it instantly reminded me of the Rosella painting I have hanging in my study room.

I’m pretty fond of the drama behind this look, if I had a wig I think it would be a pretty convincing transformation! Which is exactly what I love about cosplay and makeup :) And we all know I’m a sucker for strong pigmentation~ Want vibrant colours for your eye shadows? Use a wet brush, it seriously works!

Grocery Shopping!

Fables in Fashion

I’ve noticed a bit of a trend in my wardrobe, I tend to stick to solid colours, avoiding patterns etc. And I’ve figured out why.

Fables in Fashion

These same items of clothing can be easily incorporated into corporate wear, which up until recently has always been my “bread and butter” 5 days a week, 52 weeks a year for the last 3 years.

Fables in Fashion

In other words, they are versatile!

Fables in Fashion

I say recently because a week ago I was assigned a dream client (fashion industry), where everyday is “casual” clothes, oh the many outfits I will finally be able to explore! If only I could take photos of myself at work, without you know, getting awkward stares!

Fables in Fashion

That’s besides the point, when I go shopping for hardware supplies for cosplay, and food for the rest of the week I try and dress as casually and as chic as possible! Too bad none of the photos really show you the aqua colour on my lower eyelash line :(

No thanks, I won’t be repurchasing that!

Posted by on July 25, 2010 in Makeup | 0 comments

Lately I seem to be “hitting the pan” for many of the products I use, and you know what that mean! Time to repurchase the lot =D But it got me thinking about products I still will try to use (because unless the product is absolutely terrible, I can’t bare to throw it away, wasteful!), but will not ever be repurchasing again. Let’s start with eyeshadows, snapped below.

Fables in Fashion

All of these shadows have disappointed me, which isn’t too bad if you saw how many shadows I own. Generally tho, I know in the future to stay clear of these brands. The main problem with all them are their lack of pigmentation, wear and general “pop”. They make my eyes appear dull, not what an eyeshadow should be doing in my opinion! This doesn’t mean the brands themselves are terrible, maybe just their eyeshadows?

For example, Rimmel have great Eye Soft Kohl pencils that I do use very often, and Integrate also have great pencil and liquid eye liners. (Cute note, the Integrate neutral palette to the left has 2 liners, the white and brown which are actually quite good! I intend to at least finish them up)

I wish more bloggers would talk about products they won’t be repurchasing, imagine all the dud products I could avoid (not to mention money I could save!), if you have any let me know! I have a major rant of a review coming up on a product I plan to throw away whilst still virtually full!!

Finally, bring on the wigs! As a cosplayer, I think last I counted I have about 25+ wigs in storage? But due to my taste in costumes, they all seem to be the same short blue colour :/ So I dug a little deeper and pulled out this cute number. It instantly reminded me of pixies, and as I’ve been meaning to do a Winter look for ages, what better combination? I kinda wish I attempted something with my eyebrows… they look a little out of place being so black.

Let me just say, two days after shooting this look I still find glitter randomly on me @_@ And yet when I look at these photos, I can’t help but think, NEEDS MOAR SPARKLE!

Walking the Distance – Comfortable Stylish Shoes for Work

Posted by on July 21, 2010 in Shoes | 11 comments

Due to the nature of my job, I rarely work in the same office for more than a few months. This means as part of my daily commute, there could be a lot to very little walking involved.

As a shoe lover, I would never throw on a pair of runners during my commute. It’s just not something I could let myself do (tho I have no issue with those who do). Luckily over the years I’ve learnt what stylish shoes are good for walk in and what isn’t. I’ll have to warn you that the shoes below are the ones I use on an everyday basis for work, so they are mostly black and grays (I don’t work in a very colourful / creative place hehe) and pretty worn out by now.

Flats
No surprise here, but the most important thing to look out for is quality. The last thing you want is to buy a cheap pair with sole as thick as paper. Your feet will be screaming in pain, especially if your commute is mainly concrete.

Fables in Fashion

One way to counter this however is to use insoles. Make sure they are sturdy, thick and comfortable. Also considering wearing stockings / socks in the winter for added comfort and warmth.

Heels
Yes, I went there! I do wear heels when I have a lot of walking to do, there are just certain factors to look out for.

Kitten Heels
There are shoes with heels about 1 inch high, for most people the heels are so small they hardly notice them.

Fables in Fashion

Mary Janes
These are absolutely my all time favourite shoes to wear. They look elegant and I can (and have) chased after trains and buses with these without any problems. (Just make sure not to attempt this until you are a very confident heels wearer, else you could end up with a broken ankle).

Fables in Fashion

The reason these shoes tend to be very comfortable is thanks to the additional strap near the ankle. This strap basically ties the shoe to your foot, preventing it from accidentally slipping off. This also removed the additional strain on your calves that most people will experience when wearing traditional pumps.

Boots
Whether they have heels or not, I could walk a mile and then some in boots. Like the Mary Janes, since it covers your entire foot, there is no need to strain your calf muscles from “holding” on to the shoes. And so you are feel to walk/run/dance as long as you like without much, if any discomfort. A great tip is to wear socks, keep you warm in the winter and provide so much added comfort.

10 Beauty Questions

Posted by on July 19, 2010 in Beauty | 2 comments

Preparing for Manifest is so easy feat, especially when your day job consumes so much of your life. Luckily, this particular client I am happy to be working with.

It’s a large Australian fashion house, in fact just this morning I stumbled into one of their design rooms and it is everything like a fashion magazine in the movies. Walls and racks of shoes, handbags and clothes! Twas like a dream, if only I was the person in the room, rather than the one staring in lol, I’m pretty sure I’m going to enjoy myself here :)

So like I said, when time is limited, stress levels are high, I turn to fun things to maintain my sanity. Laura completed this survey on YouTube, figured I’d post my answers here :)

1. Would you rather go out with messy hair and nice make-up or Nice hair and no make-up?

Nice air an no makeup, I already constantly go out without makeup and feel fine, but I cannot stand leaving the house without at least neatly styling my hair!

2. Would you rather shave your eyebrows or have your eyelashes fall out?

Shave my eyebrows, cause I can always draw them back on, but I would hate to have to wear false lashes everyday.

3. Would you rather be forced to shop at only MAC or Sephora for the rest of your life?

MAC, because we don’t have a Sephora in Australia so ignorance is bliss :)

4. Would you rather wear lipgloss/lipliner look or 80′s perm?

Lipgloss/Lipliner! I… could never rock an 80′s perm, just not me.

5. Would you rather leave the house with an obvious foundation line or overdone blush?

Overdone blush, because I think it can be really adorable depending on the shade and blending :D

6. Would you rather wear MC Hammer pants or biker shorts in public?

Biker shorts, at least I’d give people the impression I was fit?

7. Would you rather have a bad orange-y spray tan or really weird tan lines that can’t be covered?

Weird tanlines, if you know me, you know I hate tanning. So this was the better of the two evils.

8. Would you rather have a bad haircut or bad hair color?

Bad hair colour, cause you can always work it with a great haircut ;)

9. Would you rather have youtube or twitter taken away forever?

Twitter, Youtube feeds me more.

10. Would you rather give up using makeup brushes or mascara?

Mascara, I can fake lashes with a good application of eyeliner and individual false lashes (or even lash extensions)

Lookbook #14 – Subtle Vampire

Fables in Fashion Lookbook #14 Vampire Fables in Fashion Lookbook #14 Vampire

Fine I’ll admit it, I caught a little bit of the Vampire fever too! Though I haven’t gone to see Eclipse or any of the Twilight movies in the cinemas, I’ve watched downloads from friends, does that count? Either way, I’ve always love the regal polished look of Vampires in almost any movie, whether it be Underworld, Van Helsing, Dracula etc. Plus, I’m a girl who loves love porcelain pale skin (I’m one of the few people I know who detests tanning), and that’s pretty much all there is to this look!

It’s nothing dramatic, just very simple and more an overall “feeling” than anything. I tried my best to stain my lips, instead of paint them. Attempting to get a “blood soaked” tint, not 100% happy with how that turned out, probably would have been better off using a lip stain instead (and being less neat?), and I had to end up lightening my eyes digitally :( Even tho my eyes are kinda light for an asian, they aren’t this light! Hopefully some new contacts will change that tho :)

Review: MAC Lacquer in Scorcher

Posted by on July 13, 2010 in Reviews | 2 comments

MAC Lacquer in Scorcher

Pros:

  • Applies like a dream
  • So pigmented that a little goes a long way
  • Great opacity, 3 coats would be completely solid

Cons:

  • Not everyone will love this colour

Price: $22AU

Where: MAC website, Myer, David Jones or any stand alone MAC stores.

MAC Lacquer in Scorcher

Apologies for the less that presentable photos, these were taken with my iPhone, because I was THAT eager to post that I couldn’t wait till I got home from work to take proper photos / edit / watermark etc.

It’s pretty rare for me to use a product and think, “omgosh I’m in love / need to tell everyone!”.

Generally MAC Lacquers are easy to use and apply pretty well. If it weren’t for the heavy price tag I’m sure I’d own a few more. But generally, they’re nothing special to me, that is till I met Scorcher. Part of the To The Beach collection, I picked this up upon the recommendation of some beauty gurus and I do not regret it one bit! If all MAC polishes would apply this well, I’d have every single colour!

Usually, I need to have at least one side of the brush completely saturated in product to fully cover one of my nails, I literally needed half a drop to completely and comfortably cover an entire nail with Scorcher. It is so pigmented, my favourite kind of product! A little goes a long way, which is the number 1 thing on my list when colour is involved.

I wonder if it was the formula or the brush, but I didn’t mess up the application at all. Usually I’ll go over my cuticles, over the sides etc, which usually means a bit of a clean up after wards. Not this time, it was like I had complete effortless control. And on top of all that, the colour is amazing! I’ve really been into some of the bright matte / cream colours this Winter, maybe it’s my rebellion against the cold? Though I feel a change coming on next week, gotta start embracing Winter before Spring arrives I think.

Overall, so glad this is now part of my collection, I love it! No regrets~ I really hope MAC keeps up the great work and I’m sure a couple more bottles will find their way into my home ;)

Cream vs Powder Blush

Posted by on July 12, 2010 in Makeup | 0 comments

Blush. This stuff is amazing, not like you didn’t already know that. It proved to be a total life saver for me on Saturday when I was suppose to meet up with Sefie at 11:15am. I woke up at 11:00am. Within 5 mins, threw on liner, mascara, concealer and blush! All 4 items that instantly make me look awake :D But that’s besides the point of this post.

But seriously, wearing blush compliments any complexion. It can completely lift your look, leaving you appearing more awake, fresh and polished. I’ve been dabbling with powder and cream blushes for a while now, and I thought I’d give my take on them.

Powder Blushes

Pros
Easy application and very easy to blend against naked, foundationed or powdered skin.
Dry products tend to last longer than wet / cream products.
Large variation of colours, since powder tends to be more common.

Cons
Can ‘sweat’ or rub off over the course of the day.

Cream Blushes

Pros
Long lasting
Gives a dewy fresh look, depending on the colour it can appear like it’s your natural flush
Can easily be applied with fingers

Cons
Won’t blend well over powder foundation, especially when applied with your fingers.
Can pose a bit of a learning curve for those new to make up

Want longer lasting blush?
Apply your powder blush OVER your cream blush! Just make sure the colours suit you, it’ll last you all day and night :)

Lookbook #13 – Glitter Candy

Fables in Fashion Lookbook #13 Glitter Candy Fables in Fashion Lookbook #13 Glitter Candy

So I bought these little nail stickers whilst I was in Japan earlier this year. Whilst I am a total nail polish addict, I don’t do fake nails. This is mostly since I’m a pianist, I need short neat nails at all times. But it was too cute not to buy, and a few months later I bought myself a small collection of nails to paint and this was the result! I love love the way these look, so girly! But I was pretty much an inelegant mess as I tried to set up my camera and later on remove my makeup. (Surprised I didn’t end up taking out my own eye)

Whilst I’m on the topic of inelegant messes, glitter how I love/hate you. I think this is just an area of makeup I’ll need to keep working on. A fine balance between the amount of glitter vs the amount of adhesive, plus method of application. Ah yes, a fine art indeed.
